White Belt Control
& Submission

A structured development plan for establishing dominant positions and applying high-percentage attacks.

Core Principle

Control comes first. Submission comes second. A white belt who controls consistently will develop far faster.

Primary Positions
  • Mount
  • Side Control
  • Back Control
  • Knee on Belly
Concepts
  • Position over submission
  • Control before attack
  • Maintain balance while attacking
  • Keep chest-to-chest connection
  • Follow movement — don't force it
Mount Hold Drill
  • Partner attempts basic escapes
  • Top player maintains mount
Side Control Hold Drill
  • Hold side control for 60 seconds
  • Focus on pressure and connection
Back Control Retention
  • Maintain seatbelt and hooks
  • Partner attempts to escape
Submissions should come from dominant positions. Avoid rushing into attacks until control is established.
Chokes
  • Rear Naked Choke
  • Cross Collar Choke
  • Ezekiel Choke
Joint Locks
  • Americana
  • Kimura
  • Straight Arm Lock
  • Basic Triangle
Concepts
  • Secure position first
  • Isolate one arm or the neck
  • Control the shoulder line
  • Control hips before attacking
Submission Isolation Drill
  • Start from mount, isolate arm
  • Return to neutral and repeat
Choke Setup Drill
  • Secure grips, set position
  • Reset — focus on setup, not finishing
Do not learn dozens of submissions. Master a few reliable ones.
Reaction Map
  • Opponent pushes → Armbar or Triangle
  • Opponent turns → Back Take
  • Opponent exposes neck → Choke
Concepts
  • Reactions create opportunities
  • Don't force submissions
  • Wait for mistakes
  • Follow the opponent's movement
Reaction Drill
  • Partner gives a specific reaction
  • Apply the appropriate attack
Flow Drill
  • Mount → Armbar
  • Opponent escapes → Back Take
  • Opponent turns → Choke
Every escape attempt creates a submission opportunity. Don't force — follow.
Concepts
  • Slow down
  • Remove space
  • Use the whole body
  • Finish with structure, not strength
Slow Finish Drill
  • Apply submission at 20% speed
  • Focus entirely on mechanics
Partner Feedback Drill
  • Partner says where pressure is missing
  • Adjust and repeat
Many white belts lose submissions because they rush. The fastest path to better finishes is slowing down.
Mount Rounds
  • Top: Maintain mount, attack basic submissions
  • Bottom: Escape
Back Control Rounds
  • Top: Maintain hooks & seatbelt, attack RNC
  • Bottom: Escape
Side Control Rounds
  • Top: Maintain position, attack Americana & Kimura
  • Bottom: Recover guard
Positional sparring is the fastest way to improve control and submissions.
