I like to isolate the technique because my brain can sometimes only handle one piece of information at a time. Plus, when I run into a problem executing, adding the next piece feels like a natural progression after I see what purpose the next part of the system plays in trying to achieve a certain outcome.

I think we all roll our eyes a little when we ask how to escape a bad position or submission and get an answer like "just don't end up there". What they're really saying is that by the time we reach that tricky spot or are about to be submitted, many things have gone wrong for us before that. That mentality of being proactive about my defense has helped me not get stuck in side control or bottom mount as much these days and now I can think a little more about controlling and attacking. 

I keep way too much in my jiu jitsu bag. A comb, deodorant, two journals, a bar of soap, shorts, spats, rash guard, gi, a journal, a lint roller, and some moisturizer. 

As someone who had no experience coaching sports before, this class was immensely helpful. The in-person course will expose your weaknesses either as a practitioner or presenter and give you the tools unlock your full potential. 

I would tell myself to thoughtfully consider what concepts the techniques I'm learning are demonstrating. Like with cooking, you can certainly follow a good recipe and have satisfactory results. However, its nice when you understand what the ingredients are meant to do for the dish so that making modifications based on your resources is easier. 

I will sometimes practice on my partner at home! Or just work on visualizing certain positions I struggle with. Recording myself and picking apart things I could have done better also keeps my mind engaged. 

I'm excited to work on double leg takedowns with the teens! It will be another great addition to their arsenal of techniques in getting their partner to the ground.
