Brazil and Hener Gracie. The power of constructing a system for all offenses and counters.

Getting on my elbow and scissoring my legs to get out of bed was the first thing. Had a hard time. And getting down to the floor to work on something or getting up using my tactical stand up to base. Oh and my stamina for tough things has improved.

Great question. Depends on what I’m focusing on. Usually a position and trying to achieve an intention. Passing the guard. Getting an underhook. Other times it’s standup. Creating sweeping opportunities.

After watching the Gracie UFC fights I was sold but that was before the BJJ boom. Years later a friend recommended ROL. Being in Tai Kwon Do for 6 years and COVID told me it was time for a change. One of the best things I did for my self.

Excellent time to continue building our closed-guard system. We’ll start with the kimura and learn how it naturally transitions into the bump sweep, creating a high-percentage attacking chain.

This truly is an exciting week. One of my Favorites the Pendulum sweep. Besides that we will be covering 3 submissions from the guard position. Each with its own unique details on Tuesday and Thursday nights in fundamentals. @ 6pm Gi and 7pm nogi.

How does teaching improve a persons Jiu-Jitsu, and should teaching be a requirement for promotion to black belt?

I believe teaching, especially the fundamentals, has greatly enhanced my Jiu-Jitsu. Teaching forces me not only to present the technique, but to demonstrate it in a way that I would want to learn it myself. It makes me focus on the subtleties, the simplicity, and the key components that make a technique work.

By teaching and repeating those techniques over and over, they become ingrained. The technique stops being something I memorized and becomes something I truly understand-something that becomes part of me.

That said, I don’t believe teaching is for everyone, nor do I think it should be a requirement for earning a black belt. There are many outstanding practitioners who may not have the desire or aptitude to teach. However, I do believe that spending some time teaching can only help a persons development and deepen their understanding of Jiu-Jitsu.

Great question. For me it’s carving out those niches of time, if I’m not at the gym, I’ll watch film, even if it’s for 10 mins. Weights and meal prepping all come into play. Being off the mat is an opportunity to prepare for the mat.

Great escapes from top control. Along with the classic cross collar choke.
