I agree to all these answers. The body type the move, seeking the knowledge. However I started gravitating toward the systems or chaining moves together that work for me. From each position, guard side control back etc. filling the buckets with reps, research, and rate of success.

For me, the biggest mind shift was realizing that survival is progress. Early on, I measured success by submissions or wins. But once I reframed survival- escaping bad positions, lasting longer, learning to breathe under pressure, as growth, everything changed.

I’m proactive however I’m also plotting and planning encouraging my partner to move a certain way aiding me in my quest to a submission or I shall pass. Lol

Technically speaking watching my opponent and their reactions to my movements was key. Taking posts away and what that means to my future movements or game plan was significant. Lastly understanding levers and gravity meant a ton as far as a principles go.

To stay focused on finding those moments to react and do BJJ techniques. Getting your partner to react and take advantage.

Honestly, we have to have the understanding that technique and feedback have to be the number one priority. For a thinking art there has to be communication for it to be effective. Learning happens with repetitions and a patient partner.  Choose wisely grasshopper. OSS…

My noise canceling brain goes into effect in open mat. Only because I like what I have to say and not out loud. But when I do listen… I enjoy my volume up and a high tempo alternative, and old school rock.
