Definitely depends on the level of my training partner. If they’re less experienced, I like to take that time to work on things I want to add to my game but that I’m not proficient at yet. It’s a good opportunity to get good reps at that skill when I know that it wouldn’t work on a more experienced training partner. Crawl, walk, run!

Last Tuesday 10am class before things get shaken up next week, come by for tackle defense and some closed guard attacks! 

I try my best NOT to break Chris Haueter’s rules:

1) be the guy on top 

2) when on top, stay on top

3) when on bottom, have a guard you shall not pass

4) Never forget rule #1, often forgotten due to the seduction, rewarding and lazy nature of guard 

Looking forward to covering some Single Leg Defense and how we can generate our own offense from that position. It’ll be fun! 

I like watching grappling matches or UFC fights to see what the high level guys are doing. If they can get it to work on other high level guys, then there must be some value there. 

Self defense. As we see in the UFC, sport jiu jitsu doesn’t carry over well as the effectiveness of many positions drastically change when strikes are introduced. Get on top, stay on top. Simple jiu jitsu. 

My system has changed several times over my time on the mat but i would say one factor has remained consistent, I try to keep it as simple and realistic as possible. Berimbolo and some of these different types of guards are really fun to play with, but if you really got into an altercation they’re not always gonna yield the best results. Simple is king!
