If you could travel back in time to your first Jiu-Jitsu class and give yourself one piece of advice, what would you say?
I’d tell myself that your ability to go slow demonstrates your level of control and overall mastery of the martial art.

We’re excited to welcome Coach Raj as the newest addition to our team! Raj will be leading TacFit classes on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10AM, bringing her expertise in strength, endurance, and functional fitness to RŌL Academy.
Raj has an incredible background in athletics—she trained and competed in Muay Thai for several years, has completed the Chicago Marathon, multiple half marathons, and squeezes in as many 5Ks and 8Ks as she can throughout the year. She’s currently training for her third HYROX competition and takes pride in her well-rounded approach to running, lifting, and endurance training.
Beyond her personal achievements, Raj is dedicated to helping others reach their fitness goals. She is on track to complete her Personal Trainer, Nutritionist, and TacFit certifications this summer, bringing even more knowledge and expertise to our community.
We can’t wait for you to experience her energy and training style in TacFit! Join us Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10AM to train with Coach Raj and take your fitness to the next level.
Time for our question of the week.
Do you think that taking a step back and just sitting on the sidelines and watching from time to time can help your game? Any time I find myself dealing with an injury or just need to give my body a little rest I always decide to just sit on the sidelines and watch what’s going on on the mats. I feel like that’s where some of my biggest breakthroughs have come from…just taking a step back and watching the bigger picture. It’s never fun when I have to sit out due to an injury but I know I can still come in and learn something just by watching. Let me know what you think in the comments.
What is your favorite mount attack? Mine is probably the S-mount arm bar from on top your partner. We will be doing that on top a whole lot of submissions in the next upcoming weeks of Advanced No Gi. Hope to see you there!

I recently watched a video that showed the Blue Angels doing a drill called “chair flying”.
They sit in chairs, close their eyes, and go through the entire sequence of the show they are about to perform.
So my question is; Do you ever drill or spar with your eyes closed? There are a lot of situations that require us to feel our opponents weight distribution so we can pull off a sweep or technique.
If you’ve done this, has it helped?
If you haven’t, would you try it?
I started doing this about a year and a half ago and it helped my sweep game tremendously.
Question of the week.
What are you doing off the mat that you think will help you with your training on the mat? Are you strength training, watching instructional videos, watching sparring film, managing your nutrition, or something else?
Personally I’m a huge advocate of strength training. If you look at any of the big time tournaments, all the top practitioners look like superheroes. I feel that this can’t be ignored. I heard a quote somewhere that said “Jiu Jitsu is for the little guy… but then the big guys started learning Jiu Jitsu too”.
