Great question John!

Often times open mats are being viewed as overwhelming and sometimes it's very difficult to step in for very first time. Having a plan to focus on a small area, gives us a great start to anchor on. Similar to what John said above, selecting a starting position with very specific objective could not only provide the path, but also be very stimulating. Not every open training session should be physically intensive. Sparring is fun, but also it could be used as an educational tool to make our Jiu Jitsu better.

Scissor sweep for me, it was one of the first techniques I learned and it stuck with me to this day
